Rowett confirmed as new manager of Burton Albion

As of today, Gary Rowett has been named the full-time manager of Burton Albion football club. Rowett having been with the club as assistant manager for three years moved into the caretaker manager role following the sacking of Paul Peschisolido in March.

First and foremost congratulations to Gary on his promotion, as a player for Leicester City I had a lot of admiration for his committed style and quality in the full-back position during his time at Filbert Street. However, I cannot help but think that this is a mistake though, three wins in 10 matches coupled with poor performances and little sign of improvement within the side both tactically and organisation-wise leads both myself and other Albion supporters with the same thoughts with regard to Rowett's appointment.

Chairman Ben Robinson reported having to switch his phone off prior to sacking Peschisolido due to the high volume of interest in the manager's position and pulled no punches when it came to Rowett proving himself to be worthy of landing the post on a full-time basis. Yet in the penultimate home fixture against Aldershot there were rumblings of discontent on the terraces with anger directed at Rowett for finishing the match with no striker's on the pitch and a 4-1 deficite to overcome.

Burton supporter's will no doubt be wondering if this is the kind of Saturday afternoon entertainment that they are to get used to despite the promises of a budget fit for a 'top half' side from the chairman. So what exactly has Ben Robinson seen in Rowett that has put him ahead of all other potential suiters? It seem's that the chairman has taken the easy option and signed Rowett on non-contract terms frittering away valuable time a proper seasoned and experienced manager would have had over the summer to devise a plan of action for the coming season.

On the flip side Rowett could surprise us all and sign the best that the lower leagues has to offer, who knows? As Jimmy Greaves famously said 'It's a funny old game' but should Burton's end-of-season form persist into next season then I doubt much laughter will be heard coming from the home terraces.
